danielles pencil roughz

With my first two roughs, my concept is having a map (the one pictured above) of the New Orleans streetcar transportation system in the background. The first rough has the word "desire" on its own, with all the streetcar lines building up behind it (tension). Blanche, one of the main characters, takes a streetcar line called "Desire" to her sister's house who lives in a section of New Orleans called "Elysian Fields". Elysian Fields is a place in Greek mythology that is the final resting place for the souls of the heroic and the virtuous. This is ironic for Blanche because she believes she is both those things, when in reality, she has been through many emotionally tolling instances that she refuses to discuss.... which are neither heroic or virtuous. I singled out the word "desire" because that is the one thing driving each character in the play and as a result, a lot of chaos occurs. I was considering using Bodoni as the main title typeface.

The second rough has the lines building up behind the whole title. I was just playing with placing the type here. I like the concept of having the tension from the streetcar lines around the words. I was thinking of using Meta Serif for the main title typeface.

The third was just a potential new idea. I would collage an old-fashioned photo of a woman's face to represent the multiple facades Blanche puts on for herself and others throughout the play. The photos I would use would probably be some great-relative of mine. I liked the idea of having the type move within the speech bubble and underneath it. I also like the idea of incorporating an old-fashioned aspect to the poster. This one is my favorite because I feel like I could be very successful in making it look vintage-y and classic, yet still have a modern-feel.

Danielle,

I really like the idea of the map. I think your first two roughs are working better tho. I like the type in both of them and the placement is interesting. I'd be careful tho on the first one with the order of how things are read; right now it's a little confusing to me (for the top part). If you use the second rough, I'd make the type more bold since there is so much going on with the map.

hey danielle :)
haha - you totally got some new ideas how you could do your poster.

i actually would try to combine the last poster with the collaged face and the idea of using a streetcar plan. for the vintage idea - does this relate to the play? is it very old or does it take place in the old times?

because: i would use the plan as a slightly faded background for the collaged face (great idea to show her facettes and the craziness through that) but go more for a pop-art-look that matches the modern look of the plan.

anyways, if you decide to go with one of the first two then i would definitely prefer the one with the bigger text. although just the map behind the text could be a little bit boring.

so overall i tend to like the last one most :)
