Dani's Digital Rough

The idea for this is an abstract view of a streetcar map. The letters are the stops on the line. And the map key is the rest of the information. I set a crinkled piece of paper for the background (this is just to give you an idea of what I really want it to look like in the future.)

For the final piece, I want to print out a version with just a solid gray background. Then I want to crinkle it up to make it look worn. Then I'm going to experiment with photocopying it- just to see how it'll turn out. Something else I am going to do is make it look more map-like.... with more details.

I still need to work on the placement of the letters and the map key. Suggestions on those would be awesome.

Hey Danielle,
I think this concept is really awesome. It’s hard to do too much with the placement of the title text, because you still want people to be able to read it, but I really like how some of the letters are out of line with the others. It might be interesting to color code the stops by changing the colors of the circles around each letter. I was also thinking that it could be cool to add details like a coffee-cup stain, or something to signify the fact that this could possibly be a map that was used by one of the characters. That may or may not be what you were going for, but it was just something that might add to the more vintage effect you are going for. Good job so far!

hey danielle!

i like the general idea of using a streetcar map as a basic inspiration. but i think you should integrate it a bit different. add more details maybe...

also the type is kind of difficult to read. maybe the idea to integrate it into the map as stops doesn't work out. i have the feeling that the title is too long to incorporate it that way. did you think about placing it actually separately from the map - as kind of a counterpoint?

have a good weekend,
eva

hey danielle, i agree i like the concept of using a map and letters at the stops. But idk how i feel with the letters being placed over the crinkled map, maybe making them so it feels like they are on the map and not above it and having the crinkled feeling to them also

Ok, so you're on the right track…conceptually. The execution needs some love, though. I think the idea of printing, wrinkling and scanning could really help. But that design, pre-wrinkling needs to be rock solid. Right now, it doesn't feel very map-like. The rail lines should feel very separate from the roads, but I'd look more carefully at the maps you have for the layout of both (particularly the roads). And the key/legend feels very unconvincing. I'd rework it (again, look at other maps for reference), and maybe try to make it more horizontal and lower right-hand corner if you can. Also, the drop shadows make the rail lines feel very disjointed from the actual map. Color and weight is enough to make them stand apart.
