The first poster depicts the tentacle of a squid holding a rose. The squid represents the sea, while the rose represents the land and the love that the main character gave up for the sea. The picture as a whole signifies that the sea is his only love now. The background would either be lightly textured, or similar to the texture of an old tattered pirate map. The only other thing I might experiment with would be the addition of decorative swirls to give it a more antiquated look.
The second poster shows fish bones isolated in the enormity of the sea. It represents the death of a fisherman (the main character's profession) and being all alone. The waves would be textured - almost paperlike.

I love your first rough. I think if you tilted the rose a bit, that might add to the storyline. I like the ideas you mentioned for it in your description as well; but my question for you is, where would these swirls go?
Also, I'm not sure I like all that white space around the poster, maybe make it thinner?
As for your second rough, I think it's interesting. It might be strange to have fish bones on top of the water (not sure if they are floating or just sitting there) that might be hard to show the viewer--unless done correctly.
If you're going to keep the text how you have it, the second L in Molly gets lost next to the Y because they are the same shape.
hey gil!
great roughs. i have a hard time to decide which one is my favourite. i like that they are so different.
for the first rough i really think the message of your song gets transported. also the different textures you have make it look interesting. i think the edgy type is a good contrast to the round forms of the tentacle and the rose. i would consider making it bigger though.
the second one is definitely is an eyecatcher just because of the unusual motive. although the song is sad your poster makes me smile. its funny. i like it a lot. i am not even sure if you would need to texture the waves, but it could look interesting. well, you will see how it works out best. also i agree with jackie, that the "molly" in the title is not clearly readable.
see you soon :)
I love the simpler design and use of white space in both posters. It reminds me of a more illustrative traditional tattoo design. The fish is eye catching in the lower image, but I think you should consider looking at more complex fish skeleton designs, so you can fully take advantage of how interesting skeletons are while also balancing out some of the white space in the background. Another thing to consider (sort of leading on what Jackie said) is to put the fish underwater, maybe just below the surface, since fish bones typically wouldn't float. Although it's totally your call how abstract you want to be :)
The rose and squid design is my favorite. I love squids and I think it's good symbolism for the song. I think the graphic is a little too big, though. I would like to see more of the squids body, or at least some stray tentacles (basically a more zoomed out view of the concept). I think this would draw more attention to the text. Since the designs are both very spacious I just feel there should be more detail to balance out the white space.
