I decided to go with a more graffiti/street art theme for the wine bottle label.
I needed to incorporate it into the label now because I had to make sure it would
work alright with it. Since my "logo" is type-based it was important to see how it
could be played out on the label. I'm also playing with other info to put on the label
itself. But for now, it's just simply the name.
The first label has a more loose, handwritten feel. For the second, I used Meta Serif
and made it appear stencil-like. I added little spray marks so it looked like the
stencil had been spray painted on. The "Hello My Name Is...." stickers were one of
the original ways within the street art/graffiti scene to spread your "tag" (your graffiti
writing name) in a broader variety of places.
Another option I have made, but am not able to show right now is actually spray painting
"Tag Wineries" onto a label. I used the same stencil as the second label. I was thinking
of scanning that in to make it appear more real... that or just directing spraying it on the
bottle. I'm just not sure if it should have a more clean feel... or a more "street-like"
feel.

Hey Danielle,
I really like the edgy, playful designs you are creating. I think the graffiti inspiration is working really well, and I can see how you can expand that style to the entire package. I think either font could work, maybe even combining the second font for "Tag" and the first font for "wineries." (Maybe too many fonts, but I love the way those words look in those fonts!)
It might also be interesting to include parts of the "stencil outline" so theres sort of a really piecey rectangle outline, like you sprayed outside the lines a little, just to add some more complexity and so it doesnt come out looking too plain. I think the second font lends itself to that already with all the extra shapes.
Anyway I think this is a great concept and can't wait to see how it turns out!
Danielle, I think if you're looking for a hand done aesthetic, you need to hand do it. I'm not a big fan of the first typeface you chose, simply because it looks like you stuck type on an image. Have you tried handwriting it yourself? I think if you try writing it yourself with sharpie, you can better control the thin/thickness of the lines. Or even if you use the paint/pencil tool in illus in a thick stroke it might work.
I think the second logo it working a bit better. I like that you can see the "mistakes", the remaining spray paint around the word. Be careful that you don't distort the word by putting too much spray around it (wineries is a little hard to read at the end).
Also, have you thought about changing the color of the red for the name tag to different colors for different wines? I think that might be an interesting way for you to keep the same logo and type, but change up the color for the wines a bit.
Or you could put the name of the wine spray painted under "hello my name is" and have tag wineries be smaller under that. I think the stencil would make that look really cool too (your second type).
Lookin good!
hey jackie-
i love the suggestion of having the wine name be the focus and the winery name below. thanks! anddd changing the color of the label- that would make it a lot more interesting.
i did handwrite the first one and i have sprayed the second one buttttt im not near a scanner this weekend to scan them into illustrator/photoshop otherwise, youd have seem those. sooooo sorry about that!!
i like the ideas you got going here. and i agree with doing the spray paint hand done. spraying outside the lines also like veronica said is pretty sweet idea also and agree it could work. i like the ideas going for this and getting away from the whole vector solid as in the first. which i like better of the two
I'd suggest pushing the "Hello my name is" back by making it less white. I think it's a cool and very unique idea for a wine bottle, but right now I kind of get stuck at "Hello" and then the actual name seems secondary. I also agree that hand doing it would make it look better. I think one of your strengths is that you aren't afraid to really make something for your projects, so even when you challenge yourself to branch out, don't avoid it when it really makes sense.
I think I'd just come up with a good logotype solution for the wineries logo, and perhaps reserve the Hello stickers for the particular wines: Hello my name is Merlot…
Regarding the logo, I wouldn't recommend spending too much time trying to hand-letter your own. Tagging and it's various lettering styles take A LOT of practice to look right. And usually, non-tagger's attempts at tagging look rather counterfeit. What would be a good idea (since TAG is only 3 letters), is to gather all the graffiti typefaces you have, and pick the best letter for each. Then modify/recreate them (by hand?) so that they look cohesive, and exactly what you want. I'd also consider using the tagger letters for "TAG" and something more "typical" for "wineries".
